How to Play Skip-Bo
In Skip-Bo, each player has a face-down stock pile with its top card turned up. The whole game is a race to play every card from that stock pile onto four shared building piles that climb from 1 to 12.
You juggle a five-card hand and four personal discard piles to keep feeding your stock’s top card into play — and Skip-Bo wilds let you skip any number you’re missing.

- Instructions
Setup
- Deal each player a stock pile: 30 cards for 2–4 players, or 20 cards for 5–6.
- Turn the top card of each stock pile face up.
- Place the remaining cards face down as the shared draw pile.
- Leave space in the center for up to four building piles; each player has room for up to four discard piles.
How to play — the rules
Building piles go 1 to 12
The center building piles must be built up in strict order: a pile starts with a 1 and rises 2, 3, 4… up to 12. When a pile reaches 12 it is complete and set aside (shuffled back into the draw pile when it runs low).
A Skip-Bo card is wild and can be played as any number the pile needs — including as the starting 1.
Where you can play from
- Your hand of cards (draw back up to 5 at the start of each turn).
- The face-up top card of your stock pile — your main goal.
- The top card of any of your discard piles.
- If you play all five cards from your hand, immediately draw five more and keep going.
Ending your turn with a discard
You end your turn by placing one card from your hand onto one of your (up to four) discard piles. Discard piles do not need to be in order, and only the top card of each is playable.
Choosing which discard pile to build is a real tactic — you want your useful cards near the top and out of your own way.
A turn, step by step
- Draw until you have 5 cards in hand.
- Play cards onto the center building piles from your hand, stock pile, or discard piles — always trying to advance your stock’s top card.
- Empty your hand to draw five more and continue if you can.
- End your turn by discarding one card from your hand to a discard pile.
How to win
The entire aim is your stock pile. Every turn you want to get its face-up top card onto a building pile, revealing the next card underneath.
The first player to play the very last card of their stock pile wins the game immediately.
Strategy tips
- Prioritize your stock pile above all else — a turn that doesn’t advance it is usually a wasted one.
- Build discard piles by stacking high cards you won’t need soon, keeping useful low cards on top.
- Save Skip-Bo wilds to unstick your stock’s top card, not to dump random hand cards.
- Watch what number opponents need next and avoid setting up building piles that hand them an easy play.
- Emptying your hand mid-turn gets you five fresh cards — chain plays to keep the draws coming.

House-rule ideas
- Smaller stock piles (15 cards) for faster games.
- Three building piles instead of four for a tighter, more contested center.
- Team Skip-Bo: partners share building strategy but keep separate stock piles.
