How to Play Ticket to Ride: Europe

Ticket to Ride: Europe is a standalone game — not an expansion — set across the European continent. It keeps the same one-action-per-turn core as the original but adds three twists: stations, tunnels, and ferries.

Those additions smooth out the original’s toughest frustration (getting completely blocked) while adding a bit of push-your-luck. Many players consider it the best version to own first.

What's in the box

  • Standalone board map of Europe
  • 45 trains and 3 train stations per player
  • Train car cards with locomotives, plus destination tickets including long routes
  • A scoring track and Longest Route bonus

Setup

  1. Give each player 45 trains, 3 stations, and a scoring marker.
  2. Deal 4 train car cards and put 5 face up.
  3. Deal 1 long-route ticket and 3 regular tickets; each player keeps at least 2 tickets total.
  4. Place the starting locomotive rules aside as normal and begin with the youngest player.

How to play — the rules

Same core, one action per turn

As in the original, each turn you either draw 2 train cards, claim a route, or draw tickets (keeping at least 1). Route scoring by length is identical.

The differences below only add options — the game still teaches in minutes.

Stations

You start with 3 stations. Building one on a city lets you use a single route into that city that another player has already claimed, to help complete your tickets.

The first station costs 1 train card, the second 2, and the third 3. Every station you don’t use is worth 4 points at the end, so spend them only when you’re truly blocked.

Tunnels and ferries

  • Tunnels — after you play cards to claim a tunnel route, flip the top 3 cards of the deck. For each that matches the color you used, you must add one more matching card or the attempt fails (and your cards return to hand).
  • Ferries — these routes show locomotive symbols and require that many locomotive (wild) cards as part of the set to claim them.

A turn, step by step

  1. Take one action: draw train cards, claim a route, draw tickets, or build a station.
  2. For a tunnel, resolve the three-card flip and pay any extra matching cards.
  3. For a ferry, include the required locomotive cards.
  4. Score claimed routes and pass to the left.

How to win

The game ends the same way: once a player drops to 2 or fewer trains, everyone takes one final turn.

Score completed tickets, subtract failed ones, add 4 points per unused station, and award the Longest Route bonus. Highest total wins.

Strategy tips

  • Save stations for genuine emergencies — each unused one is 4 guaranteed points, better than a rushed connection.
  • Carry extra matching cards before attempting a tunnel so a bad flip doesn’t waste your turn.
  • Stock locomotives for ferries; getting caught short can strand a key route.
  • The long-route ticket is high risk, high reward — plan your network around it early or discard it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ticket to Ride: Europe standalone or an expansion?

It is a complete standalone game with its own board and pieces. You do not need the original USA edition to play it.

How do tunnels work in Ticket to Ride: Europe?

After playing cards for a tunnel route, you flip the top three cards of the deck. Each one matching your chosen color forces you to play an extra matching card, or the claim fails and your cards come back.

What are stations for?

A station lets you use one of another player’s routes into that city to complete a ticket. You get three; unused ones are worth 4 points each at the end.

Which Ticket to Ride should I buy first?

The USA original is the simplest, but Europe is only slightly more complex and many players prefer it as a first purchase thanks to stations reducing the “blocked out” feeling.

House-rule ideas

  • Play without tunnels for a faster, more predictable game with new players.
  • Guarantee each player one completed ticket by allowing a single free swap during setup.
  • Award a small bonus for using all three stations to encourage aggressive play.
